Temperature and salinity extremes from 2014-2019 in the California Current System and its source waters

Abstract The California Current System in the eastern North Pacific Ocean has experienced record high temperatures since marine heatwave of 2014-2016. Here we show, through a compilation data from shipboard hydrography, ocean gliders, and Argo floats, that high-salinity anomaly affected 2017-2019 addition to anomalously temperatures. salinity formed 2015 Subtropical Gyre was subsequently advected into System, generation mechanism different events leading heatwaves 2013/2014 2019 Pacific. unique at least 16 years with an annual mean deviation long-term average greater than 0.2 anomalies 0.7 observed offshore. Our results imply source waters were found 2017-2019, near-surface rivaling Undercurrent.
